Nearly half of US homes were built before 1980, with 100-amp or 150-amp electrical service designed long before anyone owned an EV charger, a heat pump, and a home battery simultaneously. Adding all three to an old panel often triggers a service upgrade - a $2,500-5,000 job that requires pulling a permit and coordinating with your utility.
Under NEC 2026 Article 705, a UL 3141-certified smart panel can substitute for a full service upgrade when adding new high-draw loads like EV chargers or heat pumps. Seven of the nine major smart panels on the market are now UL 3141 certified - including SPAN, Lumin, Schneider Square D, Eaton Brightlayer, and Enphase IQ Load Controller.
If your installer has told you that adding a heat pump or EV charger requires a service upgrade, a smart panel is worth getting a second quote on - it may resolve the same problem for less money.

Smart panels broadly fall into two categories: full replacements (replace your existing panel entirely) and add-on modules (install alongside your existing panel). The right choice depends on your existing panel's condition and your goals.

A smart panel's payback depends entirely on what problem it's solving. If it's avoiding a $4,000 service upgrade, the math is straightforward. If it's enabling VPP earnings of $500-1,500/year, payback is 2-5 years on an add-on module. If it's purely for convenience and monitoring, payback is harder to quantify.
