What to look for

Not all community solar programs
are the same. Here's what
actually matters.

Fixed vs floating discount

Fixed discounts (e.g. 10% off your utility rate forever) are better than escalator contracts that rise annually. If your utility rate goes up, a fixed percentage discount means your dollar savings grow automatically.

Sol Country pick: Fixed discount

Cancel anytime vs long-term contract

Cancel anytime programs offer 5–10% savings but maximum flexibility — right for renters who may move. Long-term contracts (20–25 years) can reach 30% savings but lock you to one utility territory.

Sol Country pick: Cancel anytime for renters · Long-term only for homeowners who are confident

When do unused credits expire?

Credits that expire monthly are risky if your usage varies. Look for programs with annual rolling credit windows. If you subscribe to more than you use, expired credits reduce your actual savings.

Sol Country pick: Annual or no expiry only

Getting the right size for your usage

Subscribe to 95–100% of your annual electricity usage — not the maximum 120% allowed. Over-subscribing means paying for credits you can't use. Good providers size your subscription to your actual usage history.

Sol Country tip: Your Find My Power results estimate the right subscription size based on your utility rate and monthly bill.

One bill vs two bills

Some providers (like Arcadia/Perch) combine everything into one monthly bill. Others send a separate CS invoice while credits appear on your utility bill. Single billing is simpler and makes savings easier to track.

Sol Country pick: Single billing

Income-qualified programs

Low and moderate income households may qualify for 20–100% discounts on community solar — far higher than the standard 5–15%. Some programs offer free subscriptions to qualified households. Always check LMI eligibility before subscribing to a market-rate program.

Sol Country tip: Sol Country flags LMI eligible programs with a green badge. Check these first if your household income qualifies.
