Home battery storage 2026

Your battery pays you back.
The grid doesn't.

A home battery stores your solar, covers outages, and earns you $300-800/year through VPP programs. Here's the honest 2026 picture — including what changed when the federal tax credit expired.

The honest 2026 picture

The federal tax credit is gone.
The case for batteries is stronger.

Section 25D — the 30% federal tax credit for home batteries — expired December 31, 2025. A typical battery system that once generated $4,000-6,000 in federal credits now generates zero. That's the bad news.

The good news: VPP (virtual power plant) programs now pay battery owners $300-800+ per year in grid earnings. State rebates in California, Connecticut, New York, and Colorado cover $2,000-16,000 of installation cost. And in California — where electricity costs $0.25-0.35/kWh under NEM 3.0 — a battery that stores midday solar and discharges at peak rates pays back in 6-9 years without any incentives.

The math changed in 2026. It didn't get worse. It got different.

What expired
  • Section 25D (30% federal credit for owned batteries) — expired December 31, 2025
  • Section 25C (heat pump and efficiency credits) — expired December 31, 2025
  • Section 30C (EV charger credit) — expired June 30, 2026
What's still active
  • VPP programs — paying $300-800+/year
  • State battery rebates — $2,000-16,000
  • HEAR panel upgrade rebate (not a tax credit) — up to $4,000 for income-qualifying households, for the panel upgrade a battery needs — not the battery itself
  • Section 48E — for leased/third-party owned systems through 2032
Which battery is right for you

Four platforms. Honest trade-offs.

Battery choice depends on your existing solar system, whether VPP matters to you, and your timeline. Here's what actually differentiates them.

Virtual power plant programs

Your battery can earn money
while you own it.

VPP programs pay battery owners to allow their utility to dispatch power during grid stress events. You set the floor — your backup power is always protected first. The grid calls on what's left.

Tesla reported paying Powerwall owners $9.9 million through VPP programs in a single year — confirming the earnings model works at scale.

September 9, 2026: Tesla and Sunrun dispatched 580 MW from residential home batteries in a single event — the largest distributed power plant dispatch ever recorded.

Your state changes the math

Battery economics vary widely
by state and utility.

California — battery is essential under NEM 3.0

California's Net Billing Tariff (NEM 3.0) pays only $0.04-0.08/kWh for solar you export to the grid — vs $0.25-0.35/kWh retail rate. A battery that stores midday solar and discharges at peak saves $0.17-0.27/kWh on every stored kWh. Without a battery: California solar economics are weak. With a battery: among the strongest in the US.

IMPORTANT — NOT ALL CA UTILITIES: LADWP (Los Angeles) and SMUD (Sacramento) are municipal utilities NOT on NEM 3.0. Their solar export rates are more favorable. Check your electricity bill for your utility name.

SGIP IN 2026: General SGIP budget: largely closed. SGIP Equity Resiliency: ACTIVE for income-qualified households in high fire-risk areas — up to $14,850+ for battery + solar combined. Verify at sgipinfo.com.

New England — the best VPP region in the US

Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine. ConnectedSolutions pays $225/kW in summer and $50/kW in winter — up to $2,750/year for a 10 kWh battery. Vermont's Green Mountain Power BYOD program pays $10,500 over 10 years.

These programs stack with the $450M New England Heat Pump Accelerator and state-level battery rebates: CT: $200/kWh upfront rebate (~$2,700 for Powerwall). RI: REF grants $3,500-5,000.

Note: Connecticut Smart-E Loan is 1.99% APR as of August 2026 (not 0.99% — that rate expired). Verify current rate at ctgreenbank.com.

Colorado — multiple stacking programs

Xcel Energy's Renewable Battery Connect VPP is active for Colorado homeowners. Fort Collins Utilities offers up to $6,000 for battery storage paired with solar (Fort Collins Utilities customers only — separate from Xcel). Denver city offers additional battery rebates at denvergov.org.

Colorado HEAR: If your battery installation requires an electrical panel upgrade, HEAR may rebate up to $4,000 for that panel upgrade for income-qualifying households — not the battery itself, and as a rebate rather than a tax credit. Ask your installer.

HEAR does not cover the battery — but it may cover the panel upgrade.

The federal HEAR program (Heat and Energy Affordability Rebate) covers heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, and electrical panel upgrades — not battery storage systems. HEAR is a rebate program, not a tax credit, and it is active only in states where HEAR has launched.

However: many battery installations require an electrical panel upgrade to support the added load. HEAR covers electrical panel upgrades up to $4,000 for income-qualifying households. Note: the Section 25C tax credit, which previously covered panel upgrades, expired December 31, 2025 — there is no federal tax credit for panel upgrades in 2026.

If you're installing a battery and your home needs a panel upgrade — which is common in older homes — you may be able to use HEAR for the panel component even though the battery itself doesn't qualify.

Ask your installer: “Does this battery installation require a panel upgrade? If so, can we structure the project to access HEAR for that component?”

Honest payback math

Without VPP: 12-18 years.
With VPP: 3-5 years.

Here's the honest math on a $14,000 installed Powerwall 3 in 2026:

Scenario 1 — no VPP, no solar

Backup power only

Savings
$0/year from grid
Payback
Never (it's insurance, not investment)

If your primary goal is outage protection and peace of mind — that's legitimate. But the economics don't pencil as an investment.

Scenario 2 — solar + battery, no VPP

NEM 3.0 California example

Annual savings
~$800-1,200/year from self-consumption (storing midday solar for evening use at $0.25/kWh vs exporting at $0.04/kWh = $0.21/kWh × ~5,000 kWh)
Payback
11-17 years

Still worth it in California where the alternative is exporting at pennies.

Scenario 3 — solar + battery + VPP

The recommended approach

Self-consumption savings
$800-1,200/year
VPP earnings
ConnectedSolutions (NE): $2,750/year OR CalReady (CA): seasonal OR APS Arizona: $600-800/year
Total annual benefit
$1,400-3,950/year
Payback
3.5-10 years depending on program

This is why Sol Country recommends enrolling in VPP at installation — the same battery, dramatically better economics.

All figures are estimates based on 2026 program rates and California/New England electricity costs. Your actual savings depend on your usage, utility, and VPP dispatch frequency. Get a project-specific quote from a certified installer.
