BEFORE YOU BUY

Certified and legal are two different things.

Every kit on this page is UL 3700 certified — meaning an independent lab has verified it's electrically safe to use. But safe and legal are not the same thing.

Whether you can plug this into your outlet and feed power back into your home's circuit — without your landlord's permission and without utility approval — depends entirely on your state's law, not the product's certification.

In the 8 states that have signed balcony solar laws, you are legally protected. Your landlord cannot say no. Your utility cannot demand approval. Your lease cannot prohibit it.

In every other state, the product is safe — but you're operating in a legal gray area. Your landlord can still say no. Your utility can still object. Sol Country recommends checking your state before ordering. Certified vs legal, explained →

In these 8 states — fully legal

All other states — gray area
The product is certified and safe. But without a state law your landlord can still prohibit it, and your utility can still object. Many people use these systems in non-signed states without issue. But there is no legal protection if challenged.
See which states are advancing →
IS IT SAFE IN ALL STATES?
Yes. UL 3700 certification means the product has been independently verified as electrically safe regardless of which state you're in.
IS IT LEGAL IN ALL STATES?
No. Legal protection for using it as grid-tied solar requires your state to have passed a specific law. 8 states have. Check yours.
WHAT IF MY STATE HASN'T SIGNED?
You can still purchase the kit. Many people use them in non-signed states without issue. You're accepting the legal gray area risk rather than having full legal protection. Sol Country will notify you when your state signs.

Plug-in balcony solar

Kits for legalized states -
UL 3700 pending across the category.

Every kit on this page is built with UL-listed components (UL 1741 microinverters, UL-listed panels and hardware) and is designed to plug into a standard wall outlet. UL 3700 — the new plug-in solar system standard published December 2025 — has not yet been awarded to any kit; first system certifications are expected late 2026. Sol Country tracks certification status for every kit and flips the label the day it changes.

These are not portable power stations. These are grid-connected plug-in solar systems. They require a legalized state to install.

While waiting for your state's law to pass, Sol Country recommends two alternatives:

Before you install

Update your insurance policy. New to this? Read the guide →

Most renter's and homeowner's insurance policies require notification when you add solar equipment. A balcony solar kit is typically covered as personal property - but verify your policy before installing. Getting a quote takes under 2 minutes.
