Cooling efficiency varies dramatically by unit type and model. A high-efficiency window AC uses 20-30% less electricity than a standard one. A mini-split uses 30-40% less than most window ACs. The operating cost difference over 10 years is often $1,000-$2,000. Efficiency is measured differently by type: window ACs use CEER (look for 12.0 or higher, 15.0 is excellent), portable ACs also use CEER (most land between 5-9; anything above 10 is genuinely efficient), and mini-splits use SEER2 (18+ is good, 22+ is excellent).
When a portable AC says "14,000 BTU," that's the ASHRAE lab rating. The real-world SACC rating for the same unit is typically 30-40% lower — about 10,000 BTU. Always compare SACC to SACC when sizing a portable unit, or you'll end up with a unit that can't cool your room.
